Antti Salovaara defended his cognitive science PhD thesis on creative technology use a few days before this seminar and this was an opportunity for broader discussion. In his thesis, Salovaara theorizes people’s creative workarounds as appropriations. He proposes three distinct cognitive process explanations for understanding workarounds, which sheds more cognitive psychology light on the phenomenon. The research contributes to cognitive science and has design implications for human-computer interaction.
